Terms and Conditions


We require prepayment for your reservation. We will charge your credit card at the time of booking for the nights you have reserved. This confirms you accept our terms and conditions, our rooms and our prices.

If we are unable to confirm you booking immediately, as soon as we have confirmation you will be charged.

Our rates are in NZ dollars and include taxes, and are subject to change without notice. The prices are valid from the time of booking.

Prices are quoted per lodge room or chalet, but double and twin rooms can be booked for one person only, but the full room rate applies.

Dorm rooms are booked per person, we have a combination of male and female and share dorms. Maximum room occupancy is clearly stated when making a reservation extra numbers of people will be charged a penalty.

We will try and accommodate you in the same room for the duration of your stay, but if there is limited availability we have to move your rooms to another room of the same or better standard than originally booked.

Occasionally we are not able to accommodate multi-share (dorm style) accommodation in the same room for two or more guests but we will do our best to ensure this doesn’t happen.

We will send you a booking confirmation to the email address you provided during reservation.

All reservations must have a valid credit card at the time of the reservation, and on arrival. This card may be required to be pre-authorised on check in or charged for any extras from the Cocoon Café or Backyard Burger, or any damage to property or unpaid accommodation.

The Backyard Inn Limited, its staff, contractors accept no responsibility for personal accidents, injury suffered or loss or damage to personal property while on site. We recommend all guest hold travel or personal insurance.

The Backyard Inn Limited, its staff, and our security company retain the right to refuse accommodation or to remove a guest from the property at any time.

If we are unable to provide your accommodation because of an incident out of our control natural disaster, water or power issue we will inform you as soon as possible, and we will refund your payment.

Amendment, non-arrival, cancellation and refund charges:


To amend or change a reservation a $5 fee applies per transaction. Amendment’s are only able to be made 48 hours prior to the day of arrival or it is classified as a cancellation, therefore there is no refund.

If you do not arrive for your reservation there is no refund for any of the nights.


To cancel a booking a $5 cancellation fee applies per booking transaction. Bookings made on the day of arrival are non-refundable for the first night if you cancel. Our cancellation rules apply for any subsequent nights.

Where you cancel a pre-paid booking we will give you a full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before arrival. We will however deduct a $5 cancellation fee and any agents commission However, we will fully refund you for subsequent nights, less any applicable agent’s commission.

Where you cancel an unpaid booking, we will charge you a $5 cancellation fee. If you do not advise us of your cancellation, the non-arrival clause applies. Refunds will be made back to your credit card.

Late Arrivals please contact reception on prior to arrival so we can accommodate your needs.

Age of Stay

Guest must be at least 18 years old to make a reservation and comply with our terms and Conditions. Anyone 17 years or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Proof of Identification a driver’s license or a passport must be provided for every guest staying at the property.

Privacy of your information and Website usage. Backyard Inn recognises the privacy concerns of its customers, clients, guests, contacts and the users of its website. We store your details in our Property Management System as a profile, which in the future can be used for any other bookings. This will already have your preferences mentioned so we can cater all your needs.

We are the owner, licensee or permitted user of the intellectual property rights in our site and of the content and material published on it. Those works are protected by copyright laws and treaties around the world. All such rights are reserved.

The Backyard Inn does not, and will not guarantee that any file and/or programme available for download and/or execution from or via this website is free from viruses or any other condition that may damage or interfere with data, hardware or software that may be used. On agreeing to these terms, you release us from all responsibility for the consequence of its use and take responsibility for all risk of use of programs and files on this website.

Backyard Inn House Rules

For a stress-free stay for all our guests, The Backyard Inn requests that you be mindful of other guest trying to rest. Between 22.30 NZT and 07.00 NZT we request that you respect all other guests and keep the noise level to a minimum. Should we receive any noise-complaints this will be considered as a first warning and if repeated, we reserve the right to charge a NZ$30 Disturbance Fee per person.

If your behaviour is highly offensive, the Hostel Manager may require you to leave the hostel immediately without a refund.

If you damage any hostel property, we will charge your credit card for the cost of the repairs.

Should you resist the Staff or Manager’s request that you leave the property, we will call the Police.

Smoking is not permitted inside any part of The Backyard Inn buildings; this includes the use of vapes. There are designated areas for smokers outside the building. Any guest who smokes inside the rooms is liable to pay a cleaning fee. Any guest suspected of or caught altering smoke detectors or sprinklers will be asked to leave the property immediately without refund.

Alcohol Policy. We have a no BYO policy for The Backyard Inn as we have a Licensed Premise on-site. You will be asked to return your alcohol to your vehicle for the duration of your stay. This is in-line with our Social Code of conduct.

All non –guest visitors must report to reception and be off the premise by 8.30pm.

The following is not permitted on-site:

  • All weapons 
  • Illegal and non – prescribed drugs
    Smoking within the accommodation or café and bar
  • Theft of other guests’ or our property
  • Drunken, noisy, disorderly or abusive behaviour or physical violence
  • Damage to our property

Lost Property when found by the staff at The Backyard Inn will be securely stored for two weeks. After this time items that are deemed high value (passports & items approximately over $50) will be handed to the local police station. Items below this value will be donated to our favoured local charity. The Backyard Inn are not liable for lost property and storage. If you believe you have left behind any of your personal belongings, please contact The Backyard Inn reception so this can be traced and returned to you as soon as possible. Guests are liable for handling, postage and courier costs or charges for returning lost property. Alternatively, lost property can be collected in person from the Front Desk

Social Media: When you post and/or tag any social media content (including, without limitation, photos, text, graphics, audio, video, location information, comments or any other materials) in relation The Backyard Inn properties on social media sites (such as Instagram or Facebook) (“Social Content”), we may request your permission to use this Social Content in connection with our business. Such use may be in conjunction with our website, electronic media and/or print material.

By consenting to our request to use your Social Content, you agree to us publishing your name or username associated with that content, and using all or any of your Social Content. You agree, represent and warrant that You own, or have obtained from third parties, all appropriate rights in your Social Content.

The Authorised Entities’ use of your Social Content will not violate the intellectual, proprietary or other rights of any third party, or any applicable law.

The Social Content is not libellous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive, indecent, threatening, hateful, offensive or other unlawful.

You release the Authorised Entities from any liability relating to its use of your Social Content in accordance with these Social Media Terms.


Groups Terms and Conditions

Reservations Held, Deposit and Payment

We will hold accommodation for your group, but a 10% deposit is due within 14 days. Full payment for your booking is required 14 days prior to arrival. If any room key is lost you will be charged $10 each key.

Changes in Numbers

Please notify us one week prior to arrival Any more than 1 person there will be no refund.

Meeting / Conference Rooms

The conference room is available to groups who have the Meal and Accommodation package, free of charge depending on availability. The conference facilities must be left as found, clean and tidy. Groups are not permitted to use the conference room kitchen.

Cancellations and Refunds

Cancellation is 30 days prior to the booking date. We will hold your deposit for this cancellation. Within the 30 day period we will charge 50% of the cost of the reservation.


We have a no BYO policy. Any alcohol brought onto the premises will be taken until check out date. Any person intoxicated and or acting in any anyway disrespectful will be immediately asked to leave the complex, with no refund.

Onsite Bar

We have an onsite Bar which is open from 5pm daily. Anyone intoxicated or under the age of 18 will not be served. Bar snacks are available.


We have full camera surveillance onsite 24 hours, 7 days a week. Noise level must be at a minimum from 10pm onwards. Any person being excessively loud or behaving in any manner that may offend or disturb other guest’s onsite will immediately be given a warning. If no person complies with the warning then Security or police will be contacted after the first warning.


The communal kitchen is available, there are hot plates and microwaves but no ovens. We are not able to warm food in our commercial kitchens. Plates, bowls and cutlery are available for groups for a $30 charge from reception. Any losses will be charged above the fee.


Any damages to The Backyard Inn property or chattels will be charged to the group. As with any extra cleaning required to tidy up after your Groups stay.
