The Backyard Inn (formerly Kiwipaka), was born out of good old Kiwi hospitality! An open door policy and a love for entertaining and looking after people, a philosophy and attitude that continues to this day.
Our proud 30+ years of experience and local knowledge make our offering unique. Clean, comfy and down to earth, its like staying with old friends - except with 246 beds to choose from!
Doug McLeay was a bit of a legend. In the late 80’s he would travel the country and pick up hitch hikers. There was no where to stay – so he built this place. He epitomised the kiwi “can do“ attitude, and was a great host.
Doug and Bev moved to Rotorua in 1958 and he broke in his own farm from scrub. He gave hours of his time to the community, was a family man, loved diving, boating and skiing.
He was also a passionate home-brewer, making a lager in the summer and a stout in the winter, every year from 18 years of age till he stopped at 75!
He loved beer and thought there was “no bad beer, some are just better than others.”
Doug became famous for his home brew! “Burnsdale Lotion” was known throughout the district. After an evening of BBQ and home-brew, guests would merrily weave their way home.
